Frequently asked questions about transit clearance (FAQ)
What is transit clearance?
It allows the legally compliant transport of goods through a country without the need for immediate customs clearance.
When do I need a T1 document?
Whenever goods are transported to or from a third country and pass through Switzerland or the EU.
Who issues T1 documents?
Authorised customs agencies such as Fischer Global Services.
How does transit through Switzerland work?
We prepare the declarations electronically, and you receive the document at your chosen border crossing. Afterwards, the vehicle can continue to its destination without any further customs stop.
What is the difference between T1 and Carnet ATA?
T1 = standard transit for the movement of goods. Carnet ATA = for temporary imports and exports, e.g. for trade fairs or events.
Can I apply for transit customs clearance at short notice?
Yes, we also offer express clearances — depending on the documentation, even on the same day.
What is Passar and how does it differ from the previous NCTS procedure?
Passar is the new electronic customs system introduced by the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG). It gradually replaces previous systems, including NCTS (New Computerised Transit System).
While NCTS was used exclusively for transit procedures, Passar will digitally cover all customs processes — export, transit and import. Fischer Global Services supports you throughout the transition and ensures smooth processing within the new system.
Is the NCTS procedure still in use?
NCTS is being phased out and replaced by Passar. Since the introduction of Passar for transit operations, electronic customs clearance has been handled within the new system. Fischer Global Services now works exclusively with Passar but ensures correct processing for all shipments involving both old and new customs procedures — especially for cross-border movements outside Switzerland.
How does Fischer Global Services support transit clearance in the Passar system?
We manage the entire transit process within the Passar system — from the electronic registration of goods to continuous monitoring of the transit status. Our experts ensure that your shipments are correctly declared, accompanied and closed — for both national and international transits.
What does the migration to Passar mean for existing customs processes?
The introduction of Passar digitises and harmonises customs declarations. This results in greater transparency and faster processing times. For our clients, this means fewer manual steps, shorter clearance times and secure communication with the customs authorities — all through one central interface managed by Fischer Global Services.
Does Passar apply only to transit or also to import and export procedures?
Passar will ultimately replace all previous Swiss customs systems — not only NCTS for transit but also e-dec Export and Import. The transition is being rolled out in phases: transit is already handled via Passar, while export and import will follow. Fischer Global Services accompanies you through every stage of this transformation.
